Research Rough draft Comments

Stacy:
You do a good job picking quotes from "Psychology of Fraud"  (notice article title in quotes) and explaining them.  You also do a decent job linking it to why people don't tell on cheaters.
NOW, you need to write up the rest of your research from your other articles.  Your conclusion states that people cheat because they want fun, are bored, or mad, but none of your paragraphs show the research to support this.  You also need one specific case of a person cheating on their significant  other.

Bergy:
You have done a good job of explaining three cases of dishonesty at the university level.  Good progress there!
You need to clearly state where all of your info came from -- Article title and author.  Give this info for each case.
Again, your conclusion is that these people lie to protect the reputation of the schools, but nothing in your research proves this.  You don't have any articles to back up the why.  "Psychology of Fraud" would certainly be helpful here, as well as the other research you should have. Also, the case of the Kean University president shows that he lied before he even got the job, so he wouldn't have been protecting the reputation yet!

Mark:
Lots of information here, and a strong point of view is well expressed.
In the intro you need to make sure to explain  what Fast and Furious was in general terms : supposed to be a sting operation, but in reality was a way of the the ATF to run guns and drugs to groups deemed"helpful" to our government.  Something short and succinct like that.
Next, be careful to give credit for all exact words AND paraphrased ideas. 2nd paragraph you quoted more than you indicated.  3rd paragraph needs a source.   5th paragraph The first sentence is a major run-on -- sort it out.  Conclusion: last line seems abrupt based on what came right before!

Please correct Works Cited as discussed in class!

Monica:
Lots of good information and well written.
A few points: Article Titles belong in quotes even in the internal citations.
You didn't use "Psychology of Fraud" even though it clearly fits in with the "job" part.
Your conclusion states that one of the reasons is the need for the spotlight -- I didn't see this anywhere in the body!!

Kendra:
You are absolutely on the right track, and reading your paper is a pleasure.
A few minor details:
Be sure to note where your quotation ends (you often only put the first quotation mark).
In your second paragraph, I think that the Lamar Pierce quote comes from the 'Psychology of Fraud" so that is where you need to also give credit.  You could do something like Spiegel quotes Pierce as telling us...
Last paragraph: put  the internal citation in a parenthesis.  Explain who Toby Groves is for an audience that hasn't read that article.
Looking good....

Felicia:
I have several students who would like to interview  you for their papers.
Oh, the irony.
Right now about 2 paragraphs of this paper were written by you; the rest is all cut and pastes from different articles.
You need to paraphrase and summarize the stories of the cheating wives and then give credit for each and every story as well as lines like"The road to infidelity is paved with...."

Britnie:
Very clearly writing; I think you may be in need of a wee bit of expansion here!
The article you choose from the "Psychology of Fraud" doesn't really fit with the case you have chosen.  Look more carefully at that article and really mine some ideas from it about cognitive limitations to use in the analysis of the Zimmerman case.  Additionally, you might add a second case that could illuminate either the "laziness" or "confused morals".
Remember to write Zimmerman's lie (show possession)
When you explain the Zimmerman case and what was said in the court proceedings please give credit to the source that you read it in!

John:
Please refer to the paragraphs I handed back today for some of the grammar rules.
You have pulled two interesting points from the Oppenheimer article, but you haven't used any other sources.  You need to do more work on building some more paragraphs to support your conclusion that people are looking for excitement, or from what is missing in their current marriage.  Also, remember to use the "Psychology of Fraud" article.

Jerry:
Your title is confusing where it says "on essential eliminating jobs".
Lots of good info.
You need a source for the info about the recesion in the second paragraph. In the seventh paragraph you need to explain what "the honesty program" is.  You need another specific example of dishonesty when it comes to job creation otherwise you will get bogged down in generalities again.
Don't forget to use "The Psychology of Fraud".

Dan:
From the paragraphs you gave me so far, make sure each point you make ties make to your main question.

Your first paragraph could tie in to the part of "Psychology of Fraud" where it talks about we lie because we care.

In the first "why" paragraph block the long quote.
In the last paragraph "but another reason is" is actually the beginning of a new paragraph!!

John Edwards

"While I do not believe I did anything illegal, or ever thought I was doing anything illegal, I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong and there is no one else responsible for my sins," Edwards said on the courthouse steps. (Associated Press)

5 sources required

The research paper must use a total of 5 sources:
1 MUST be "the Psychology of Fraud"
1 or 2 should be specific case examples of the type of dishonesty you are investigating (internet or databases).
2 or 3 should be more philosophical "why" articles that are pulled from the databases!!

Remember also to give credit to the author/article for exact words or IDEAS that are not your own!

Monday 6/18

Tomorrow we are in L19 (the original room in the bottom of the library)
Homework is the rough draft of the research essay.  Please bring 3 copies.
Be sure to bring it already printed out because many of the word systems you are using may not be compatible with the macs in L19.

Weekend Homework

Reminder: We have no class on Thursday :(.
The weekend homework is assignment #2 on our syllabus.  You must have all your notes completed before beginning that assignment.  Post or email me if you need help.
Be Happy!

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Reminder

When taking your notes, the comment/connect  section should explain how the quote you are working on from the article relates to YOUR PRIMARY QUESTION (why do husbands cheat, why do politicians change their stories, why do children lie, why do parents lie, why do media celebrities create false crimes....)

Tuesday Night

Find 3 more database articles and take notes on each of them just like the format we have been using in class. 2 of these articles should be "theory based" (why) and one should be realted to the specific/case example you are using.   Remember, the rule of thumb is that you should be able to find at least two exact lines from each page of what you are reading.  A 2 page article nets 4 quotes, a 8 page article nets 16 quotes and so on....

10:40 grammar lesson!!

Monday Night

Take detailed notes on both "The Psychology of Fraud," and the article you found about the particular case you are investigating.  Follow the format from in class, which is also printed out under "assignment 1" in your latest syllabus.   Also, finish the s-v exercises 1-5, and/or review s-v rules that can be found on the chompchomp.com home page under handouts, s-v agreement, power-point.

Saturday, June 9, 2012

Just noticed....

The article really isn't that long.... As I was re-reading it on-line, I breezed right through.  I couldn't figure out why it was 16 printed, then I looked at the print-out more closely, and I saw that the last eight pages were just the same article re-done with comic bubbles for some of the thoughts.  DO NOT FEEL OVERWHELMED BECAUSE IT IS REALLY ONLY ABOUT 8 PAGES!!!

Weekend Homework

Finish Reading the article we started in class "Why Good People Do Bad Things"
http://www.npr.org/2012/05/01/151764534/psychology-of-fraud-why-good-people-do-bad-things.
Please jot some notes down at the end.  We will be discussing it in detail on Monday.

Also, find one article about a current incident of dishonesty that is in the public sphere (Remember, we discussed all types in class).

Have a good weekend!!!

Warning!

Yes, I have heard of Spark notes, etc. that are on the web and review some of the essays we have read.   In fact, I have just re-read several of them tonight.  Using the ideas from these sites without giving them credit is called plagiarism, which as you all know, equals an F.
If you have copied from the net, take it out now before handing it in, or give credit for all ideas that ARE NOT yours.

Draft comments for John, Monica, and Mark

John: You need to do a bit more work on your main idea.  What does looking at the motivation in both stories help us understand?  Also, you might be going a little overboard with the interpretation in Quindlan that these boys were looking for a respect -- that is just a guess on your part.  What we KNOW is that their mental illness caused them to act in certain ways....

Add an introduction that gets us interested in motivation

Monica: Also, work on your main idea just a little bit more.  I think you just have to emphasize more about how we never know when the negative push might be used positively or might make someone snap.  In both essays discouragement was the motivator, but it had completely different results.  Work on that a bit more and add to intro some hint of it....

Mark: Cut out all sections where you write about comparing and contrasting -- especially the intro.  The focus of the paper is your idea about mental enslavement, not that you are writing a compare contrast essay!!
Write a new intro that gets us thinking about all the different ways we can be enslaved in our lives!!
Add direct quotes from each essay.
Add a Works Cited.

Monday Night Homework

Write the letter to the partner you were given in class.

Felicia and Randolph are partners by default.

Darren please write to Mitchel (yes, Mitchel this means that lucky you will receive two letters!)

Tonight you need to start pulling together your thoughts about the essays that we have been reading(“What Is Intelligence,” “Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass,” The C Word in The Hallways,””. In the essay that you will be writing, I will ask you to compare and contrast at least two of these essays (you may choose to do three) in order to communicate your OWN IDEA.  You will need to be able to accurately summarize the main idea of each essay, use direct quotes from the essays to substantiate your claims, and show your readers how the similarities and differences between these essays lead you to your own idea/judgment.  To start you on this process, I am asking you to write a letter to a friendly audience: a classmate.

BASED ON YOUR READING OF THE ESSAYS and your own experiences, write a letter to a classmate explaining your thoughts about society.   You may want to introduce yourself briefly in this letter, but the main emphasis of your writing should be on trying to get your fellow college student interested in the ideas you are developing.  Although your classmate has read the same essays as you, s/he may not remember them clearly, or may have skipped reading the one you have chosen.  For this reason, you need to provide a brief summary of at least two essays that you are working with, and at least two direct quotations.  Use this letter as a place to figure out what you are thinking and as a place you can engage someone else with your thinking!

At least two pages, typed, double-spaced.
